Guns and violence-What is becoming of our schools?

My Position

The safety of our school systems is a major issue in today's society.  Violence in schools is becoming more common than ever.  School shootings are occurring more and more often.  I believe that we need to take a stand on this issue.  We cannot continually hear about another school shooting that has occurred.  School districts need to invest in more safety measures.  This should be done at all schools - not just inner city schools.  The guns are not just being brought to inner city schools.  They are being brought to all schools.  We cannot continue to allow this.  The students of today will become the leaders of tomorrow.  That is a pretty scary thought considering that a lot of the students in schools are bringing weapons to school.
The National School Safety  and Security Services publishes a list of the 2000-2001 school year incidents that have occurred.  The list includes violent deaths, and a sample of reported school-related shootings not resulted in deaths, bomb threats, etc.  The list is huge, and the public doesn't hear about half of them.
It is sad to think that metal detectors belong at schools, but times are changing.  This is now mandatory.  How are students supposed to feel safe at schools these days?  Every couple of days, the news is telling us that another school shooting has occurred.  How are students supposed to make the school a learning environment, when a lot of students do not feel safe going to school?
I also believe that a security guard should be on duty at all high schools in the United States.  We should work on preventing these situations from even occurring.  The public has that "it won't happen here" attitude.  Isn't that what the people at Columbine High School thought?  It does happen, and it will continue to happen until schools begin to realize that drastic security and safety measures need to be taken.
