Diagnostic Tests for Gestational Diabetes

There is currently only one reliable test for diagnosing Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy.  Since glucose levels during pregnancy are generally lower, the acceptable range of the test is also lower than what is used for Type I and Type II diabetes.  Testing is usually done during the 24th to 28th weeks of pregnancy.

-OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test):  If two of the four plasma glucose values exceed:  fasting plasma glucose level of 95 mg/dL, 1 hour level of 180 mg/dL, 2 hour level of 155 mg/dL, or 3 hour level of 140 mg/dL.

Weight gain associated with a normal pregnancy usual is no greater than 35 lbs; excessive weight gain during pregnancy may indicate gestational diabetes.
