Legacy Project

Dear Brother,

The question of legacy is a important one in an organization built on successive generations. Historians trace their art through successive generations, considering how actions taken by one generation impacted the next. Corporations can trace their wealth to great decisions made by previous managers. Scientists build their knowledge on that of their predecessors; as Issac Newton said, his contributions were as "Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants." So too, in music, musicologists study in depth the evolution of music over time, and how the elements of music have developed over the centuries. Many institutions are sedimentary, and this fraternity is no different.

The founding brothers of the Mu Kappa Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi have seen it fit in this volume to record the details of their lives which would not otherwise be available to future generations. Our hope in doing is to make our lives relevant to successive generations of brothers who will learn our names, but not necessarily the details of our experience in starting this chapter which often go unnoticed. While we are sure Grand Valley State University has grown and changed in the time since we attended it, and while we hope that the Mu Kappa Chapter has grown and prospered, we reject the the idea that we as members are any different from our successors, and hope that the following account can help demonstrate that. In the commission of this work, we have attempted to give ourselves a human face, and we hope future generations of brothers will endeavor to do the same. Ultimately we seek to create a legacy which 50 years from now will show that while time passes, the brothers of the Mu Kappa chapter are forever united by a love of music and share common bonds of friendship which can transcend time.

To you, the future brothers of Mu Kappa, we commend this project, our legacy to you.

Respectfully Submitted,
