Laker Chapter History

The Laker Chapter was found in the 1991-1992 school year.  It was founded by members of GVSU’s Residence Housing Association.   Since the founding year, the Laker Chapter has grown in leaps and bounds.  Growth was accompanied by many struggles and triumphs.   The Laker Chapter was first recognized for its many accomplishments and contributions to residence life at GVSU with the GLACURH NRHH Chapter of the Year Award in 1998.  After that, the Laker Chapter has achieved and accomplished even more and has taken home the MORHA NRHH Chapter of the Year Award in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004, and the GLACURH Chapter of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

Many Laker Chapter members have gone on in life and accomplished many great things.  (Click the Members link on the side panel to see a complete listing of our members).  Our members have not only done amazing things for GVSU, but have also made contributions at the state, regional, and national level as well.  One of our members, Nikki Overway, wrote several pieces of legislation that created a MORHA NRHH Member of the Year Award.  She also wrote pieces of legislation that solidified MORHA OTM submission guidelines.  For the past two years, members of the Laker Chapter have served on the MORHA OTM Committee as well as the GLACURH OTM Committee.

The Laker Chapter focuses on four key things: recognition, academics, community service, and leadership development.  We recognize the efforts and achievements of GVSU’s leaders.  As we are an honorary and selective organization that you must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible, we believe academics are the most important aspect of your college experience.  We strive to be excellent STUDENT leaders.  Throughout each year we focus on many community service projects including Walk for a Cure, Make-A-Wish, Ronald McDonald House, Angel Tree, and Closet Cleanout.  We provide many different leadership opportunities to our members including serving on the Executive Board, serving on different committees, serving on OTM Committees, through attending conferences, and through co-chairing programs.
