Minority Teacher Education Center Program

Grand Valley State University, in cooperation with a number of Michigan school districts, offers a Minority Teacher Education Center program.

This program has been set up to especially encourage minority students to enter the field of education through a program coordinated between the state's school districts and Grand Valley's School of Education and Office of Minority Affa irs.

The program provides selected students with renewable full-tuition scholarships and fees (excluding course fees) through the Bert Price Scholarship Program and with up to four years of paid, work-related experience in a school district.

Summer internships are provided, when possible, for all students who qualify for the program. The Minority Teacher Education Center will make every effort to assist you in securing an internship. You may work up to 560 hours during the summer at a rate commensurate with the school district policy. The rate may increase as your responsibilities increase.

In some cases, you will also have the opportunity to work additional hours per week during the academic year, if the location of the internship is convenient, if you maintain the required grade point average, and receive the dean’s < /B>approval. Work during the academic year must not interfere with your academic progress, however.

When you become a participant in the program, you will be assigned a "mentor" from the participating school district. Mentors assist students in understanding work requirements. Your mentor will be advised of your courses and progress. As your academic and professional skills develop, responsibilities and professional training will accordingly.
