My Story

>>Travel
I like driving, I like traveling.

Michigan is a beautiful place because lakes around it. The city where I live is near the west coast of Michigan, I'm not far from Lake Michigan. I like to stay on the beach of Lake Michigan alone when I was tired. I like the sound of wave.

When I was in China, I traveled a lot, I've been to many seesights in different parts of China during spare time. Traveling is the best way to escape from busy study and work. Since I came to the US, I've been to New York and San Francisco, after buying a car and a GPS navigator, an idea flash to me which is to go to Southern America. In Dec 15th 2006, I started this trip, Zeeland, MI --> Indianapolis, IN --> Cincinnati, OH --> Lexington, KY --> Knoxville, TN --> Asheville, NC --> Columbia, SC. 15 hours and a half, what a long trip. I supposed to arrive Columbia within 15 hours, but I got lose in Indianapolis even I have a GPS navigator :)

Traveling gives me fresh ideas and energy.

>>Music
At the beginning of the second year in university, I found my classmate XingZi held a guitar in his arms on the next door, I guessed it must be a second hand one, but tone quality was just fine. What stimulate me to buy a guitar is a melody song called " roam singer's lover", at the same time it is influenced by some emotional fluctuations gone through in that carefree time, I determined to buy one, borrowed the money and set out in an afternoon, the opposite side of Sichuan Univ. was the Sichuan Music street, there were many musical instruments, after chose at will I paid the money.

My second guitar was brought in spring of the next year, invested by my grandpa, at autumn of the second year, he left us ……So I may recall the memory of that kindly old man every time when I hold this guitar in arms.

My skill can not reach that of performance, yet the courage and love for music, made Xingzi and me participate in a lot of large or small performances, some of them might be successful, some might not, even worse, but, I treasure these chances very much, and cherish the memory of that period of time very much. Dreaming of becoming a roam singer one day, in a small attic, lean against a window facing the north, see the stars with my lover ……

I wrote a song for a girl at the three grade, a very simple song, however it representative my impression, one year after, I processed the song again, but there is no mood for me to issue it again, the affair is over and the situation has been changed, I found I had grown up for sure, some romantic thinking has been diluted by the realistic pressure, but still buried a stretch of pure land for a girl, maybe my future lover, in the deepest place of my heart. Time just like songs, the old shabby guitar, I have been giving him a piggyback and traveling a lot of places , the vagrant crossroad, lonely cliff, its dreary sound stay several grieved, it has changed all those into the past events, life is continuing ……

Below are some cover pics of my Albums:)

>>I'm on the newspaper!!

At the beginning of my work for City of Zeeland, I was interviewed by a pretty lady journalist from Michigan West Advance Newspaper, after the interview, a guy came into my office and flashed me by his camera without talking with me, then he left, what a wired guy, I saw my big head picture on the newspaper the next day, I regretted that I should not cut hair so early. It can be a birthday gift for me, since my birthday was coming in two days. I also received my GPS navigator which I bought online at the same day!

If you're in the city of Zeeland this summer, you might find Grand Valley State University master's student Jiayu Wang taking photos of city construction projects or mapping the longitude and latitude of the city's manhole covers.

Wang, 24, is interning during the summer for the City Services and Infrastructure Department. His work includes photographing and then uploading construction project pictures along with other updates to the city's Web site, http://www.ci.zeeland.mi.us, and utilizing the city's new geographic information system.

The system allows for the city to manage and update Zeeland's geographical information by putting the data in a digital format so it can be backed up, stored in multiple locations, and readily shared by several departments.

"The city wanted someone who knew GIS," said Wang, who has gained experience using GIS while working as a graduate assistant for one of his GVSU professors. "I enjoy the work," he said.

Wang also knows Steve Hallock, the City Services and Infrastructure director, who is a fellow student in GVSU's master's in public administration program.

Wang said he hopes to one day bring what he's learning while at GVSU and working for the city home to his native China.

"GIS is new in China," said Wang, who is from Beijing. "Going back will be challenging but also an opportunity." Wang said while he's in the United States he is enjoying his time in West Michigan.

"The environment and people here are very good," he said, adding the area is beautiful and he especially enjoys skiing in the winter. But, he said, "no one told me the winter would be so long."

Wang has another year at GVSU before he'll graduate with his master's degree. He then plans to work for a municipality in the United States for a year before returning to China. He said he decided to attend college in West Michigan after he graduated with a bachelor's degree in public administration from Sichuan University in South China.

"My former adviser at Sichuan advised me to apply to GVSU," he said. "She said the university's master's in public administration program is very good."

Wang said he's also happy to have the opportunity to intern for the city. And city officials are happy to have him. The City Council recently approved increasing Wang's hours from 20 to 40 hours per week in July and August so Wang's skills can be utilized to reformat the city's Webpage. Without Wang's Web site knowledge, the city would have to hire an outside contractor to do the work, city officials said.

When Wang's not working for the city or the university, he enjoys going to the beaches in Holland where said he meditates and plays his guitar. He also maintains a blog, featuring writing and pictures of his time in Michigan. "The blog lets my friends in China see what's happening here," he said.

>>Penguin
I'm penguins' good friend. People like pets, I hope my pet is a penguin, but my mom will kill me if I keep my house to be a big refrigerator.

When I was a child, my grandma bought me a little penguin doll, as it shows in the first picture. From then on, penguin entered my life. I take this penguin wherever I go, New York, San Francisco, South Carolina... There is a zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan which is called John Ball Zoo. It is a small zoo, you can even not see information about it on some of the tour books, but I always recommend my friends to visit there because of penguins in it. I have a funny idea that, if I manage the John Ball Zoo, I'll let all the penguins out during winter time, they can walk around, because Michigan is so cold! (*^0^*)

Another reason why I went to travel Columbia, SC is because the zoo there is one of the top 10 Zoos in the US, of course with penguin in it :)

>>Sports
Sports Game brings enthusiasm for human being. Soccer, Football and Basketball are my favorite games.

For Soccer, Chinese people like soccer more than our national ball - Ping pong, however, Chinese Men's soccer team is terrible, we even did not win South Korean for 25 years, every time when there is a game between China and South Korea, you can see the word "Koreanphobic" which means "our players are afraid of Korean players" on the newspaper. We support our national team all the time but it seems that the players don't know what and who they are playing for, Chinese people are losing interest in soccer gradually. I watch soccer games a lot, but not good at it. When I was in university in China, I wanted to join the soccer team of my class, but I was rejected because of my big size... then I started to play basketball. I'm good at basketball, my team won the second position in our college twice.

I even did not know the rule of Football before coming to the US, I learnt it after watching the football game of the team of my university, GVSU Lakers won the Division II championship for the fourth time couple of days before. Our quarterback Cullen Finnerty is the best player!! I support University of Michigan too, now they are the second in Division One. The mayor of City of Zeeland once brought me to Ann Arbor, where University of Michigan located, to watch the football game in the arena. That was the first time I seated in such a big arena, with more than 110,000 football fans, and this day was also the most crowded game in that gameday.
