~Philanthropy~

"Love cannot remain by itself-- it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service"

- Mother Teresa

The sisters of Alpha Sigma Alpha take pride in service the community.  Our national philanthropies include Special Olympics and the S. June Smith Center, and our local philanthropy is the Comprehensive Therapy Center, all of which service the mentally and physically disabled.  Our work with the latter organization gained us recognition through Panhellenic at Grand Valley's annual award ceremony for student organizations. By having a local philanthropy, we are able to see firsthand where our efforts go and the impact of just a few hours of our time.  Our sisters are encouraged to go out into the community and volunteer their time to various organizations each semester.

Aside from our philanthropies, we've also participate in Relay for Life (raising $5,214 in 2006 and receiving an award for being the highest fundraised team), participate and raise money during Greek Week, and help run a monopoly tournament benefiting Comprehensive Therapy.

We have also started an annual event called the "Ultimate Showdown" to raise money for Special Olympics. We held our first successful annual event this past winter semester and hope for even greater success in the coming years.

This year we are planning to participate in even more service projects, some of which with other organizations.  Stay tuned for those and other philanthropy efforts in our community!
