"The Smart People: Analysis of the Model Minority"
Kailee Dohring, RICE Conference Co-Coordinator
Model Minority: What does this phrase mean? Who are they talking about? This workshop will look at the creation of this phrase and how it is related to the Asian community, more specifically how it is related to the many college students who originate from an Asian background. The Model Minority will be explored, defined, and questioned through discussion of personal experiences and statistics.
"OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts"

This session aims to explore the impact of biases and stereotypes, explain why people don't speak up against bias and stereotypes, and offer techniques for speaking up against bias and stereotypes without blame or guilt. The presentation includes a brief video presentation followed by an interactive dialogue.

"Multi- and Biracial Asian Identity"

This presentation seeks to provide insight into the meaning of what it means to be a multi-racial or biracial Asian American by reflecting on demographic information, history, personal experience, and discussion.
"Comparison of Eastern and Western Childrearing Practices: A Research Presentation"
Fumi Matsumoto Cheever, Graduate Student of the School of CollegeStudent Affairs Leadership
Co-Presenting with Dr. Chung and Dr. Smith from the School of Social Work
China has nearly 4,000 years of rich history, over 1.3 billion inhabitants, and is one of the top five world economies. China calls for attention. This presentation is based on the findings from the GVSU School of Social Work study abroad program in China. During a 22-day trip, Cheever visited Beijing and Southeast China (Yunnan). Discussion will focus on people, values, spiritual beliefs, and the education system in China. Also, attendees will learn about rural development challenges and current social issues in China

Mumtaz Haque, President of the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit (IIMD)
Haque is well known for her leadership and service to Asian communities, raising awareness and educating others on cultural issues. Her many achievements include hosting/producing the Indian radio show "Manoranjan", serving as president of the Council of Asian Pacific Americans in 2009-10, and in May 2010 she was invited to the White House to celebrate Asian Pacific Heritage Month. IIMD works to help immigrants become adjusted to the U.S., offering legal services, English language classes, and cultural education.

Act On Racism
Act On Racism is a student theater group formed by Prof. Stewart in 2005 in response to a series of bias incidents against students. Skits, poetry, and narratives are performed based on students' actual experiences with discrimination and prejudice for the purpose of discussing and raising awareness about the prevalence of racism in our society.
