GREEKSPOTLIGHT
January 2004
In the fall of 2002 the Interfraternity Council (IFC) decided it was time to expand. The growing campus population, and the positive reputation of our Greek community made for a great time to bring more options for students interested in Greek Life at GVSU. The executive board of IFC decided to start looking into expansion options.
In the spring semester of 2003, after talking with many national offices, and a presentations on campus, it was decided that Sigma Pi would be our next group on campus. It was with much excitement that IFC and the rest of the Greek community extended the invitation to Sigma Pi to join the GVSU community.
This
fall, with the help of several local chapters including those
at Ferris and Western Michigan University, and the help of all
the Greeks here at GVSU Sigma Pi started recruiting. The visiblity
of Sigma Pi was evident from the first day they had an informational
table in the Kirkhof Center. The buzz around campus was all about
Sigma Pi. They are now an established part of the GVSU Greek community
and we are excited about what the future will hold for them.
Here
is an update from Chapter President Matt
Maletich:
"Sigma
Pi is all settled in as they begin their first full semester on
campus. Main objectives for the semester will include heavy
recruitment,
increased community and campus involvement, and becoming closer
with the Greek community! The bonds of brotherhood are growing
stronger daily, and all of the brothers are very excited about
building a legacy that will last on this campus for many years
to come.
The
colony is in the process of installing its first official pledge,
and is gaining new prospective guys almost every day. Recent
achievements include 2 successful bake-sales, highest attendance
of GVSU Greek organizations at the 2004 GLC, and second highest
GPA of campus fraternities. Look for Sigma Pi in the future,
there's a lot more in store! The guys of Sigma Pi would like to
thank the Greek Organizations on campus as well as OSL for making
us feel so at home on GVSU's campus and for helping us to make
a strong start! So thanks to all and good luck as we work
together toward an exciting future at Grand Valley State."

Please
congratulate the members of Sigma Pi on their outstanding start
to the expansion process, and wish them luck as they become the
newest group to join the GVSU Greek community.
