GREEKSPOTLIGHT
September 2003
This summer three of our campus groups won national honors. Delta Sigma Phi (IFC), Sigma Kappa (NPC) and Sigma Lambda Beta (IGC) all got top honors from their national organizations. We wanted to highlight their achievements and recognize their efforts.
Delta Sigma Phi
The brothers of the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi made history last year! For the first time in the Chapter's existence at GVSU the Delt Sigs brought home the Pyramid of Excellence award by excelling in all facets of fraternity life throughout the 2002-03 academic year, including scholarship, campus involvement and service, philanthropy, and community service. In addition to the Pyramid of Excellence the Chapter received the honor of Chapter of Excellence from GVSU due in part to several new Delt Sig traditions started last year including the annual "Club Delt Sig Safe Spring Break" alcohol awareness program and Chapter involvement in Community Outreach Week.
Sigma Kappa
The Kappa Beta Chapter of Sigma Kappa, in only its seventh year at GVSU, earned national honors as a 3 star Standards of Excellence chapter. The Standards of Excellence examines basic chapter operations with regard to scholarship, new member education, membership recruitment and development, alumnae relations, Greek participation, and much more! Grand Valley's Sigma Kappas not only achieved this honor, but also received honorable mention for a national Recruitment award, and Stephanie Gamet, House Manager, received a Sigma Kappa Foundation Scholarship. Chapters are rated on a scale of 1-3; Kappa Beta of Sigma Kappa earned a 3 star and improved dramatically from its 1 star status last year.
Sigma Lambda Beta
The GVSU colony of Sigma Lambda Beta had an excellent year. They restarted the colony, had an excellent recruitment period, coordinated the Cesar Chavez celebration and the "Americanos" exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute, and became an involved group on campus and with Greek life. Their hard work was recognized by Sigma Lambda Beta, being named the best school in their East District, making them one of the top seven schools in the country. Along with the colony honor, Brother Miguel Ortiz was named outstanding undergrad for the East District, and Hermen Diaz was named GVSU Outstanding New Member. Good work to the GVSU Brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta, keep it up.
Please congratulate the men and women of these groups when you see them on campus. They deserve a lot of credit for helping to strengthen our Greek community, serve our neighbors, and enrich the lives of their members.
