GVSU Falls Just Short This Weekend

GVSU Men’s Water Polo kicked off the 2007 season at Michigan State University this past weekend.

On Saturday, they faced off against the University of Michigan, Toronto, and Michigan Masters.  The Lakers defeated the University of Michigan 8-4, with goals scored by Matt Leskovar (3), Marc Wagner (2), Zach Heathman (2), and Chris Posthumus (1).  Sophomore Goalkeeper Peter Huyser had 11 saves.  The second game pitted the Lakers against a team from Toronto, with the Lakers again coming out on top by a score of 10-5.  Goals for this game were by Posthumus (4), Leskovar (2), Andrew Ornee (2), Wagner (1), Heathman (1).  Huyser made 7 saves in this contest.  The final game on Saturday finished 10-4 in favor of GVSU.  Leskovar (3), Wagner (2), Josh Ensing (1), Nenad Ciric (1), Ornee (1), Derek Zokoe (1), and Neil Travers (1) were the goal scorers.  Huyser made 9 saves and contributed an assist as well.

The finals on Sunday brought the last two National Champions together in MSU and GVSU.  The Laker team could not handle the pressure the Spartans brought to the game, committing 20 turnovers.  The Lakers lost 7-12 versus Michigan State.  Leskovar had 5 goals and Ciric added 2, while Huyser made 11 saves.

The team travels to Purdue this weekend to take part in the Boilermaker Invite.
