School Uniforms
Pros
-
Students save time by not having to decide what to
wear.
-
Parents and students won't have to buy expensive,
designer clothes for school.
-
All students will be wearing clothing that is tasteful,
professional, and not distracting to faculty and other students.
-
Students will no longer spend time observing and
commenting on who is wearing stylish or non stylish clothes.
-
Clothing will not be a way to distinguish rich from
poor, therefore diminishing social economic differences.
-
Different cliques, such as gangs, preps, jocks, geeks,
burn outs, or any other group won't be distinguished in school by their
clothing, thereby reducing violence from teasing and clique rivalry.
-
Theft will reduce because designer clothing such
as coats and shoes won't be on school property for someone else to steal.
-
Once students, parents, and faculty get used to school
uniform policy, there will be a greater focus placed upon academic
achievement. Students will strive to distinguish themselves from
their peers by good grades rather than cool clothing.
-
Students who can't afford cool clothing will have
higher self-esteem because they won't be comparing themselves to children
who have the clothing that they do not.
-
Families who have multiple students in the same school
would be able to share clothing with their siblings and "hand-me-down"
the clothing to the younger children.
-
A consignment shop could be established. This
would reduce the cost of buying clothing because clothing purchased would
cost less than new, and clothing sold would partially reimburse the previous
owners of the clothing. A concept very similar to college textbook
buyback.
-
Siblings sharing clothing and the consignment shop
would both increase students and parents taking better care of school uniforms
to increase their length of wear and value at resale.
Cons
-
School uniforms are counter to the psyche of American
thought.
-
School uniforms don't develop a students abilities
at decision making.
-
School uniforms hinder a students ability to express
themselves.
-
School uniforms set a dangerous precedent on individual
freedom. If you take away parents and students right to choose what
clothing they can wear, where does it stop?
-
Most current school uniforms being used are considered
ugly, scratchy, and ill fitting by students.
-
Some school uniforms are overpriced when considering
the quality of the clothing.
-
If a students' clothing is dirty or they can't find
their clothes, they have nothing to wear to school.
-
Students claim that school uniforms make them feel
like wanting to rebel against authority for having been forced to wear
them.
-
Like anyone who wears a uniform to work, students
wouldn't be able or want to wear their school clothes at any other
time.
-
Self esteem may be diminished because ugly clothing
doesn't make a person feel good about themselves.
-
Overall clothing costs would rise because students
would need both school clothes and after school clothes.
-
Initially, if not permanently, focus will be placed
upon proper wearing of the school uniform, therefore, taking away focus
from learning.
