The Grand Valley State University 2005 Scholar in Residence is certainly a well known name among current Shakespeare enthusiasts. Gerald Freedman will be a part of two discussions regarding his experiences in the theatre, specifically Shakespearean theatre. He is an Obie Award-winning director and has been involved with many prestigious theatre organizations displaying his name in their ranks. He has been previously involved as co-director of the New York Shakespeare Festival for 11 years, part of the John Houseman Acting Company, artistic director of the American Shakespeare Theatre, and artistic director of the Great Lake Theatre Festival in Cleveland.
Mr. Freedman is the current Dean of the School of Drama at North Carolina School of the Arts. Also to his name, he holds the distinction of being the first American invited to direct at London’s new Globe Theatre in 2000. In addition to Shakespeare, he directs other classic dramas, musicals, operas plays and television. It is truly a joy to have such a distinguished professional participating in the 2005 Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival and a guest as this year’s Scholar in Residence. |

Mr. Freedman will be giving informational talks about his experiences with the theatre that are not to be missed. Both are open to the public and free of charge. He will be giving two separate presentations: “Shakespeare and the American Musical Theatre” and “A Hamlet Pre-show Discussion” |
