What is My Space?

My Space can be found at www.myspace.com. This web site was created for people to share photos, online journals, music, mutual interests, messaging, commenting, along with networking and meeting new people. The use of this web site is free of charge and an account can be set up in a matter of minutes. Many people choose to update their site weekly adding journal entries, new photos, comments, etc.

Experience

I do have my own “My Space” account, however I am not very familiar with it. One of my roommates used to be really into it and convinced me to set up an account. I would check it usually every other week to see who added themselves as one of my friends, read my friends’ online journals, look at new pictures, etc. I never really participated in the site though. I never made journals, updated pictures or commented on things. I think if I did not just observe, but participated, I may find the site more entertaining and interesting.

Analysis

Overall, I feel that this is a great web genre. It is a lot of things all rolled into one. You can write online journals, where people can read about anything you have written about from poetry to song lyrics, or how your day was. It is also a great place to meet new people, find old friends and share pictures from recent events. My Space also allows you to comment on what you see or read where the rest of the public can see your comments, or comment in privacy through a direct message system, which works a lot like e-mail.
