Philosophy of the site; Basic ideas
Skimming: This section talked about how skimming of a business article is typically done rather than reading it cover to cover. Most users in this type of setting are only interested in what applies to them and only read that first, often times putting the rest off until later. This section talked about the importance of taking that into consideration when developing your writings to be read in a browser. Difference between Web Based and Word processing: This section talked about how computers are an advance to society technologically speaking but they are not quit up to speed with the rest of the print world. Computers have many great features but we are still not at the point where resolution and size are up to date with that of which newspapers and other print forms are. This is what often causes the reader to want to print a physical hard copy. Word processors are meant to be used for print documents, so until people recognize this fact and change their ways, many web documents are being developed with the aid of word processors and it simply doesn't work out. The reader is overwhelmed with the format and has to spend more time scrolling than reading. In order to override this feeling, correct techniques must be use to make web documents more readable. Learning from Newspapers: This section talks about how electronic media can learn a great deal from its predecessor the newspaper. The way in which many news papers are designed and laid out are done so to provide the reader a method to quickly glance over the copy and read the highlights of what is interesting to them. By using the basic concepts of journalism in web based publishing we can also entice the reader in similar fashions that are simply more enjoyable for the electronic reader as well. Using the concepts of above the fold, the lead and the inverted pyramid writers for electronic media will be able to use successful techniques for print and adapt them to the ever changing demands for the electronic reader. New developments for this idea of web based processing: There is a current software application named the Trellix project that is allows writers to be more electronically reader friendly in the development of web documents. Other ideas like User Interface Engineering works from Jakob Nielsen are continuing to provide better technology for improving these formats. Click on the links for more information. Personal Opinion: The philosophy behind this whole movement makes sense to me. As stated in previous sections, we must continue to make this technology better for the reader. Our advanced technology should be easier to use and should not have to set us back. There have been several people who have discussed the fact that one day we may live in a paperless world. This idea could never be accomplished unless we take a serious look at making electronic and web based reading more user friendly. The ideas and concepts presented in this site will eventually help us get to that place. |
