Civil War

WebQuest

Introduction

It is the summer of 1863.  The Civil War has been raging for over a year now with no end in sight.  You are a journalist for the local newspaper in one of the major cities of either the Confederate South or the Union North.

Task

The students will be separated into six different groups.  Each group represents a newspaper from a different Confederate or Union city.  The cities available include Columbia, Richmond, and Atlanta in the South, and New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. in the North.

Process

Within the groups each individual will be responsible for a different aspect of the newspaper.  One person will be responsible for each of the following:

v  Major battles and troop movements

v  Agriculture and Economics

v  Arts and Entertainment

v  Politics and Government

v  World News

v  Medicine and Technology

Each group will then assemble the information they gather into an actual newspaper with headlines, articles, and anything else a typical newspaper might have.  The newspaper must also include at least three advertisements for different products that may have been popular at the time.

Evaluation

Each individual will be evaluated on the thoroughness and accuracy of the article they submit to the paper.  Each group will be evaluated based on the appearance and quality of the newspaper they put together.  A few points of extra credit will be awarded to any group that includes a political cartoon from the time period.

Conclusion

Now that the newspapers have been issued the students can enjoy reading them and learning about what was happening in the day to day lives of the citizens of the Confederate and United States of America.
