For this project, I chose to re-design the home page of the Kent County Literacy Council. I had visited the page a few times in the past, but never gave the design much thought until I took this class. Since nonprofit organizations like the KCLC rely heavily on volunteers, their web sites should catch and hold a reader's attention. Visitors to the site should immediately become engaged and want to find out more about the organization. Unfortunately nonprofits don't always have the budget or time to spend on web design. At first glance, the main page of the KCLC web site is a jumble of images and text. All the images and text were created with a white background. If your web browser defaults to a white background as well this is fine. On my home computer, the browser defaults to an off-white background so that all the images and text appear as individual blocks of pieces and parts. The effect is clunky and unattractive. For my re-design, I created new images in a header at the top and menu to the left that makes the site easier to navigate. I chose a bright color green to add a little pizzazz and added a couple of black and white photos, one with a quote about reading. For the second page, I cut and pasted the text from the "about" page that describes the KCLC's mission and programs. I mostly left the text as is and simply adjusted a few of the headings. The rest of the KCLC site is structured in much the same way and could use a little of the same attention. While I would have like to redo the entire site, I only had time for these two pages.
