Why is Ritalin over prescribed to treat ADHD?

My position on Ritalin being over prescribed to treat ADHD?

I feel Ritalin is over prescribed to treat ADHD.  Parents of children with ADHD need to look into their options before jumping into Ritalin.  If a doctor recommends Ritalin within the first 15 minutes of diagnosis, a parent might want to get a second opinion (Parker, 1999).  I feel treatment should be the "proper drug" for the given individual.  The "proper drug" is the one that corrects the specific complaints of the individual (Moragne, 1996).  Ritalin is only effective in 50% to 70 % of children, so Ritalin is not the answer for everyone who suffers from ADHD (ADD Medical Treatment Center of Santa Clara Valley - Drug Treatment Chart, 3/25/01).
