Here are
a few suggestions:
If you are teaching numbers:
-
Use songs. There are lots of fun songs
out there that kids love to sing. Also, songs are a good break from the
textbook.
-
Have your students make flashcards with
the numbers on the front and the spelling on the back. Then, have them
practice saying their numbers out loud with other students. They need to
learn how to pronounce and how to spell them correctly.
-
Bring in objects for the students to
count. I have found that Skittles, M&M's, and cereal work the best.
-
If your school has the funds, try and
find a computer program which the students can use.
-
Use this web-site to print flash cards
or worksheets for your students www.dltk-kids.com/numbers/spanish/
If you are teaching the seasons:
-
Take a sheet of paper, have the students
fold it in half twice (making four equal boxes), then in each box have
the students write a season. After they have labeled each square, have
them draw a picture with objects that remind them of the season. If you
are teaching specific vocabulary for each season, have them draw and label
pictures of the vocabulary.
-
A fun project for winter is to take sugar
cookie dough, cut it into the shape of a snowman, and have the students
decorate them. While they are decorating them talk about what the word
is for snowman (muneco de nieve), the word for winter(el invierno), etc.
I have also found that this is a good place to review colors, and body
parts. Often students will make eyes, nose, and a mouth on their snowman.
Have them tell you what the word is for eyes (los ojos), etc. and what
color the eyes are.
-
For spring, have your students plant
a seed and watch it grow. Here you can teach words for the weather, the
word for soil, pot, watering can, etc.
-
For fall, have your students bring in
leaves (this only works during the fall season when the leaves are on the
trees or ground). Place a leaf inside of wax paper and iron (make sure
the iron is set on low). These are great for hanging around your classroom
or at home. Here you can teach your students the word for fall (el otono),
leaves (las hojas), and even talk about what colors you might see during
this season.
-
For summer, bring in objects that could
be used during the summer such as a bathing suit (traje de bano), sunglasses
(gafas del sol), shorts, t-shirts, etc. Give each student an object and
have them talk with other students about their object. You can also hold
each object up in front of the class and have them say the word for the
object out loud.
General tips:
-
Show your students movie they have already
seen in Spanish. Many of the Disney movies, such as Beauty and the Beast,
Lion
King, and Aladdin are sold in Spanish.
-
If you can find it, I recommend the video
Professor
Parrot Speaks Spanish. If you are a GVSU student or alumni, then you
can check it out from KCRC.
-
The movie Selena is excellent
for teaching about culture and the life of someone who was bilingual.
-
If you have an ESL program at your school,
bring in the students that are learning English and speak Spanish as their
primary language. Have your students prepare questions ahead of time that
they want to ask. Then, have your students talk with the ESL students.
This will help your students learn how to have a conversation with others
in Spanish. Also, it gives them a chance to listen to others speak Spanish.
-
Have your students review concepts you
have taught by teaching them to their classmates. The best way to learn
a concept is to teach it to someone else.
