“We need men who can dream of things that never were.”
--John F Kennedy, 1963
This quotation is an apt description of GVSU Water Polo and Matt
Kendall. Matt was perhaps the first person to really see the vision of
what GVSU could be and to do something about it. There are few people
of greater importance to the development of the program than Matt, but
few outside the team would know it. Often, the people behind the scenes
are overlooked by the stars. Not so with GVSU and Matt Kendall is
living proof.
Matt was not an exceptional athlete in the pool for GVSU. He
played the first competitive season for GVSU in 2000 as a transfer from
Western Michigan University. Matt quickly earned the respect of his
teammates and contributed to a better than expected first season. It
was in this season that Matt earned the nickname, “Iceman”, because of
his 100% accuracy on 4 meter penalty shots.
These contributions were vastly overshadowed by Matt’s out of the
pool contributions. Matt became the second team president in 2001 and
continued until the beginning of the 2003 season and came back in 2004
to help the team when it needed it most. During Matt’s tenure as
president, the team took its first trips to Tennessee and Philadelphia
from invitational tournaments. Further, Matt was almost single-handedly
responsible for getting the teams 1st trip to nationals in 2002 paid for
almost completely by the university. Matt set the bar for all future
presidents and was always thinking bigger than other club presidents had
in the past. Matt sat through countless meetings to fight for every
last penny to insure that the team had as much funds as possible (and
that other teams didn’t monopolize funds!). Matt also was instrumental
in the smooth transition between coaches in 2003 and in rectifying the
DW fiasco in 2004. Matt also attended most practices despite not
playing after the 2000 season and was a constant at most away
tournaments. Matt never asked, “What can I get out of this.” He always
asked, “What can I do for the team?” And there is really no greater
compliment than that.
Every team needs a Matt Kendall. A selfless guy who just wants
to contribute the best way he can. When he sees he can’t contribute as
much as he’d like in the water, he found a way to give even more to the
team by contributing out of it. Said Coach Skavnak, “Matt’s entrance
into the Hall of Fame in 2005 is a clear indication that at GVSU, a team
member is more than the amount of goals that they score, it’s the amount
of character, leadership, and attitude they give to the team. It is
difficult to understand the impact of Matt’s contributions without
having been there to see them. Rest assured, for those of us who were
there, Matt Kendall is the first person we would think of when asked the
question, ‘If you could pick only one teammate, who would it be?’
