Lakers Finsh 5th For 2nd Straight Season By Joey Syzmanski
South Bend, IN -- The Grand Valley men's water polo team completed yet
another successful season. At the National Collegiate Club
Championships at Notre Dame, the Lakers finished 5th for the second
straight year. The Lakers were led in scoring by first team all
tournament Chris Posthumus. Matt Leskovar also had a strong showing.
The Lakers first defeated The University of Texas 9-4 in the opening
round. Matt Leskovar and Chris Posthumus had 3 goals a piece. In the
second round, the Lakers battled against the eventual National
Runner-up Arizona Wildcats. The Lakers started out strong by drawing 4
kick outs on the first four posessions. The Lakers were unable to
score on any of these chances, while the Wildcats scored two quick
goals. In the end, Arizona's speed got the best of the Lakers,
defeating them 13-3. In their third game, GVSU was pitted against
Villanova University. Grand Valley jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and
held off a furious Villanova comeback to hold on to a 9-7 victory.
Joey Szymanski had 3 goals and Matt Leskovar had 2. In the final game
for 5th place, the Lakers faced off against the Redhawks of Miami (OH).
In the previous three meetings, Grand Valley won every time. At
Nationals, it would be no different. Grand Valley won 12-10. Pat
Lowman scored 4 goals for the Lakers while Matt Leskovar and Joey
Szymanski each chipped in two. The Lakers will work hard in the
offseason in hopes of winning a fourth straight conference championship
and a first National Title.
