Grand Valley Water Polo traveled to Kalamazoo, MI to participate in the Great Lakes Division Championships at Western Michigan University. Grand Valley went into the tournament defending Back-to Back Champions and have never lost a Great Lakes Conference game in its third year in existence. The first game found Grand Valley facing Ball State on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers had little difficulty putting away the Cardinals with a 16-7 victory. Sunday started with an early 8:00 am game against the Toledo Rockets. Grand Valley, again, had little difficulty putting the game away and handily defeated Toledo 24-2. The afternoon game found the Lakers head-to-head with arch-rival Notre Dame for the Great Lakes Division Championship. The game had all the makings of a classic. The game was back and forth with good defense from both teams. Grand Valley looked to have the game put away with a 7-4 third quarter lead, but the Irish battled back and tied the score at seven. The Lakers put in a late 6 on 5 goal as time expired in the third quarter to give Grand Valley momentum and the lead with one quarter remaining. The fourth quarter found the Lakers and Irish deadlocked 9-9 with 35 seconds remaining. The Grand Valley defense was stifling as they stopped three Notre Dame shots to regain possession with four seconds left. After the time-out, the crowd was roaring and the Lakers looked to put the game away in regulation. As the clock started a Matt Leskovar shot went off the cross bar into the hands of Chris Posthumus as he put in the rebound as time expired. The goal clinched a third consecutive Great Lakes Division Championship and a fifth seed at Nationals. The Lakers look to take their momentum of the championship as they travel to South Bend, IN to participate in the Collegiate Club Water Polo National Championships, November 18-21. Grand Valley opens tournament play with a first round match up against Texas Division Champion University of Texas, Friday, November 19 at 1:40.
