GVSU Wins Fourth Straight Tournament, Extends Win Streak to Seventeen By Craig Hoogerwerf
BLOOMINGTON, IN - The Grand Valley Men's Water Polo Club traveled to Indiana University to compete in the 2005 Hoosier Invite. Missing two players because of alarm clock failure, and tired after a six hour drive that started at six in the morning, the Lakers came out slow. Up by only two or three goals to the Miami B squad, coach Josh Ahrendt calmly informed the squad that the current performance was unnacceptable. This was exactly what the team needed to hear. The Lakers stormed out of the gate in the second half to secure the win.
In the next game, the Lakers faced a determined and confident team from the Ohio State University. The Buckeyes drew blood first, but it was only a scratch compared to the 18-0 scoring run put together by the high-powered Laker offense. Two highlight reel plays occured during this game. The first, was a rebound-scrum-garbage goal scored by Jason Roberts. Roberts stole the ball from the OSU goalie after a breakaway shot from Craig Hoogerwerf. Hoogerwerf pressured the goalie, leading him to swim right into Roberts, who proceeded to steal the ball, and flip it into the net, while being attacked by three OSU defenders. The last highlight play was from Senior Chris Posthumus. Set up at 2m, Posthumus received a great pass, threw his defender back, pump-faked 3 times, and slammed the ball into the net.
The next game matched the Lakers against the #2 ranked Michigan State University. The Lakers had a 2-1 series lead against the Spartans going into the game. The first quarter was a defensive battle, ending with a 1-0 Laker lead. The Spartans kept the game close, and managed to tie the game up late in the fourth quarter. WIth the game tied with 43 seconds left, the Lakers drew their only ejection of the game. After a time out, the Lakers set up, and Posthumus scored the go-ahead goal. With enough time for one possesion, the Spartans went to their go-to guy, but his shot was blocked, and a Laker found the rebound. The Laker's defense, led by an outstanding performance by Junior goalie Kirk Kauffman, held the Spartan's high powered offense to 7 goals. This was the third time the Lakers have beaten MSU while they were ranked as one of the top two teams in the country.
The final game of the weekend matched the Lakers with the #7 Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines drew several kickouts in the first quarter, but were only able to convert on one. Again, the Laker defense stepped up, this time shutting down the speedy Michigan counterattack. The Lakers were able to hold off several Michigan rallies, and won their 17th straight game 11-7. This win secured the Lakers' 4th tournament win in a row.
The Lakers travel to South Bend, IN for the Great Lakes Division Championships October 29 and 30. The champion receives the division's bid to the National Collegiate Club Championships, hosted by Williams College in Williamstown, MA.
