First Ever Laker Invitational

GVSU hosted their first ever home water polo tournament this past weekend, fielding both an ‘A’ and ‘B’ team.  The ‘A’ team finished 1st and the ‘B’ team finished 6th out of 8 total teams.  The ‘B’ team won 1 game and lost 2 in pool play, while the ‘A’ team finished pool play undefeated.

The ‘B’ team played Wisconsin on Sunday morning for 5th place.  The Lakers started out pretty well, but eventually faded and fell at the hands of the Badgers 10-14.  Marc Wagner led the ‘B’ team in scoring for the weekend with 14 goals.

The ‘A’ team played Michigan State on Sunday at noon for the championship.  Down 3-4 at the half, the Lakers shut out the Spartans in the 3rd quarter and took a lead they would never relinquish.  The final was 10-6.  The ‘A’ team had pretty balanced scoring for the weekend with Matt Leskovar scoring 11 goals, Zach Heathman 10, Chris Posthumus 9, Joey Szymanski 8, and Nenad Ciric 7.

The Lakers have the next weekend off and will travel to Northwestern the following weekend.
