Grand Valley State University

Who am I?

I am a sophomore at Grand Valley State University.  I am majoring in language-arts for elementary education.  This is a portfolio of my pre-service work.  I grew up in Eaton Rapids Michigan.  I attended Eaton Rapids High School before coming to Grand Valley State University.  While in high school I participated on the varsity swim team for three years.  I also played JV softball and freshmen volleyball.  My senior year I was the yearbook editor in chief.  During High school I volunteered with the Special Olympics, and Relay for Life.  I have held several part time jobs.  I worked at Big Boy as a waitress for 2 ½ years in Charlotte Michigan during high school.  I also worked at The Flower Garden, and at James Photography in Eaton Rapids.  I am currently employed at a Big Boy in Standale where I am a waitress.  Some of my hobbies include scrapbooking, reading, rollerblading, and dancing with the Grand Valley Dance Troupe.

What I Believe:

I believe it is important that every student has an opportunity to learn.  My classroom will take into account students’ different backgrounds and learning styles.  I will use as much technology in my classroom as possible.  I will also try to motivate my students to do their best by letting them know I care about them and believe they can all be successful.

How I Plan to Teach:

My classroom, by keeping in mind different learning styles, will consist of small group activities and remedial activities.  In small groups, students will do simulations, research projects, and discussions.  I will also have my students do individual assignments to help them improve their skills and understanding.  I will teach in a way that best meets the abilities and needs of my students.
