Story Statement

You get the idea of a young black girl who is at first hesitant and intimidated to join and play with another girl her age because of the fact that she’s the opposite race.  The idea came from an experience I had when I was younger, I’ve had encounters with racism many times while growing up and still do to this day.  It’s something every African American goes through sometime in their life because unfortunately there’s still people out there that still believes our kind shouldn’t walk on the same ground as theirs. Our narrative sits and watches wondering if it’s okay or not to join.

Similar perspective with this next photo but this image shows the basketball rolling towards the colored girl while she’s still in her same position watching and interested in playing.  At this time she’s getting nervous because she sees the ball rolling her way and doesn’t know if she should help or not because not knowing how the other girl will react.

The third photo shows a close-up of both girls holding the ball showing acceptance and togetherness.  I like to think of this frame like the ying-yang symbol.  The colored girl is handing the ball back to the white girl and in this scene is where we find out that it is okay for the colored girl to join and participate in the fun. This next photo is where we finally see the two playing basketball together as if they are now friends.  Here’s when our narrative is happy that she was accepted and didn’t treat her as if she didn’t belong on the same court as her kind.

My last photo shows the girl shooting the last shoot to seal the game and newly friendship between the two.  I wanted to being the series with her shooting and end the shoot with her shooting but only this time we have a much closer look and now the colored girl is included and a part of this moment instead of before in the first photo where she was just a spectator.
