In general,
things in this world do not last, and fashion exemplifies this truth.
Popular fashion is based upon rapidly changing tastes and desires, the
latest trends. Presently our culture is enamored with multipurpose
objects, so much so that such objects become a joke: a refrigerator
that connects to the internet, a cell phone with a keyboard too small
to type on, a futon uncomfortable as a couch, and also as a bed. Given
these extreme, often absurd design solutions, my response is to make
clothing as multipurpose as the high-tech gadgets consumers have grown
to love. Imagine clothing that acts as a shelter, traps your food, and
prepares your meals. Each of these functional designs is a reasonable
innovation (towards convenience in clothing), but in combination, they
render one another useless. In fact, they eliminate function for the
sake of convenience. Furthermore, the style, fabric, and overall
construction actually lessen the desirability.
For the consumer, which comes first, design or performance, glamour of design or cleverness, practicality or quality?
