Repetition is overwhelming in nature. This repetition can be destroyed through human intervention, only to continue its unrelenting growth and restoration. Through mixed media drawing these tedious, obsessive forms of mark-making serve as steps to understanding the humbling yet pivotal role we play in our environment. Layers of marks serve as historical scars, only to be covered by cloudy washes and areas of distinct refinement. These works, on paper and wood panel are consciously articulated in both mark, and in choice of the surface on which I work.
My affinity for the state of Michigan and the Midwest is testament to a feeling of pride and ownership. Michigan, a state driven by automotive industry and production creates the forum in which human environmental intervention is the culprit of environmental degradation. However, the hands of this same degradation are those responsible for its gentrification.
