What is TheFacebook:

"Thefacebook is an online directory that connects people through social networks at colleges." It is directed at and is used only by college students and alumni of selected colleges. It can only be used by students attending certain colleges. For a full list of colleges that TheFacebook is available through please look at the colleges TheFacebook is available at. There are a variety of things that a user can do if they are registered on Thefacebook. The user can post a profile of themselves with information about who they are, where they went to high school, and their interest, as well as their classes, a picture, list of the courses they are enrolled in, groups that they are a member of, a message wall where other users can comment, and a list of friends that they are connected to. This information can only be viewed by students of the same college or users from other colleges whom they have a friend connection with. Through Thefacebook members can search for people at any school in the above list, find out who is in their classes, who has the same interests, and see a visualization of their social network by who they are connected to. Arguments:

There are many different feelings about TheFacebook. Many people find it a positive addition to college life and social networking. People feel it is a simple and easily accessible way for people to connect and communicate, as well as bring students together. They feel it is a harmless way to gain and maintain friends and those of similar interests. However, it has also been criticized for making online cliques and redefining campus communication. Some people feel it has become and online popularity contest, or a new way of meeting "soul mates" online. Also, colleges that are not a part of TheFacebook are at a disadvantage because they don't have access to this form of communication. Experience:

I am new to TheFacebook scene. I have only recently become a member. I have found it hard to keep up with constantly changing my profile and updating my picture. It is time consuming to have to browse through pages and make clever comments on other's walls when I would rather just call them on the phone, and it becomes frantic trying to create connections with as many friends as possible. On the other hand, friends from my past that I haven't talked to in years have found me on TheFacebook, and I have been able to reconnected with them. It has proved to be an important way to get in touch with many people I wouldn't know how to find other ways. Though it is quite overwhelming at times, I have benefited from becoming a member.

Advice:

If you have the opportunity to become a member of TheFacebook, there a few things to keep in mind. Like with all online communication, users have to be careful of who they are communicating with, and people online can be very different in person. Also, because it can be so time consuming to stay on top of everything, do not "waste" too much time being social online instead of socializing in other ways as well. TheFacebook is a very interesting and useful new form of communication for college students. If you have an opportunity it is worth a try and can prove to be beneficial, however, it is important to not be consumed with the new craze.
