Alisa Jane McConaway, heir apparent to Kyler Corporation, was born the granddaughter of the company's founder, the daughter of his eldest son, a detective for the Chicago PD and his wife, a paramedic. Alisa was one of the pair's two children, and she and her twin brother, Timothy, had rather unremarkable childhoods until the untimely deaths of their parents in a crime-related incident when the twins were twelve. From that point onward, the twins were brought up by their uncle, Christopher, a retired military officer who had taken the reins of Kyler Corp. after the death of his father.
Despite the loss of their parents, the twins grew up happy and well-adjusted. Alisa grew quite close to her brother's best friend, Matthew O'Brien, as the three grew up, and by the time they graduted from high school, the pair were engaged, to be married after each completed their undergraduate educations -- he at Anapolis, and she at the University of Chicago. It seemed, however, that their love was doomed. Shortly after graduation from the Academy and after flight training, Matthew was dispatched to serve aboard one of the carriers stationed in the Middle East and was lost soon after his posting. Shortly thereafter, Alisa lost touch with her beloved brother, who had joined the Air Force. Lost and bereaved, Alisa poured herself into scholarship, approaching it with a single-mindedness that bordered on the obssesive. Never, however, did she lose hope that her Matt was still alive, and out there somewhere, trying to find his way back to her. After receiving her Ph.D in Archaeology, she accepted a post at her alma mater, although she spent more time doing fieldwork and research than she did in the classroom, although she proved to be an able instructor. She was doing fieldwork in Egypt, living in Al Jizah, when she was contacted by individuals from a classified division of the US Armed Forces, who claimed they were in need of her skills. After being recruited, Alisa spent the following years working on classified projects somewhere in Colorado, departing from suburban Denver only rarely. Eventually, Alisa located her brother and Matthew again, however, circumstances once again consipired against her and her beloved. Alisa disappeared for years, and that disappearance almost destroyed Matthew O'Brien, by then a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. He married another woman, one who managed to return his sanity to him after the loss of his Alisa, much to Alisa's dismay upon her eventual return. She had waited long years for him with no end in sight, but she was fully cognizant of the fact that he had suffered the same, and more. The pair remained friends throughout the several years that followed, up until the death of Matthew's wife. A year or so later, feelings rekindled between the childhood loves, and Matthew once again proposed to Alisa, a proposal she accepted. Fate, however, is often cruel, and it seemed that the destiny of this pair, in this lifetime, was to be forever apart. Matthew was killed during a storm at sea, when his fighter crashed after a lightning strike. The pair were to have married the next month. Some time later, Alisa settled in New York, buying an apartment building with a storefront in the lower level. She opened a bookstore and coffee shop and offered consulting and translation services there, at Scholar's Gate, which was what she chose to call her new establishment. She divides her time between her commitments in Colorado, her shop in New York, and the classes she has been teaching at one of the many universities in New York. Alisa holds a BA in Archaeology from University of Chicago, Ph.D in Archaeology from London University and a Ph.D in Linguistics from University of Chicago. Most of the extant information on her is classified, and most of that is at the very highest levels. Many of her theories are considered to be radical, even crazy, but there is no doubt that she is a highly intelligent young woman with knowledge that belies her apparent years. Although some documents exist that seem to indicate she is far older, her appearance is that of a woman of no more than thirty years. It is speculated that she may take the reins of Kyler Corporation from her aging uncle in the near future. She remains unmarried to this day, and keeps residences in Manhattan and Chicago, as well as a ranch Colorado, near NORAD. |
