This web site will guide you through web design step by step. It offers a lot of terminology and "how to" information. This site also offers a tutorial on FTP programs. It does look a little loud but, the information is useful.
This site covers many topics of concern to web designers. It offers answers to questions like what is the difference between HTML and XHTML? It also gives a suggestion for an FTP program to use, what it is like, how much it costs, and why you need it. I has a lot of color and creative text attributes. If anything it is a good example of making a site look interesting while it is still functional.
This site includes articles detailing topics like "sending e-mail from a web page" and "tips for new web designers." It has a community offering tips, articles, forums and newsletters on web design.
Vincent Flanders designed this site to "help people design effective and aesthetically pleasing web pages." He offers examples of sites that have accessibility, usability and regular design problems, including ugliness. He gives us the what not to do in design.

This site is probably the best example site I have found. The pages are clean. The links give examples of different pages that serve different functions like professional design pages or browse pages. These pages look like their functions if you will. It also has personalized informations like interviews with designers which allow you many perspectives.
