The Origin of YOLO

As many of us know, the acronym "YOLO" establishes the fact that "you only live once". As far as experts are concerned, YOLO first originated on Average Joe, an NBC reality show. However, the word yolo was recently developed into a verb, adjective, adverb, and a noun.

  • to yolo-infinitive form of verb
  • Yoloer-noun
  • Yololy-adverb /adjective
  • Verb Form: "Yoloing"

It is unsure when the verb form of yolo was first used, nonetheless; it has been trending amongst the teen population. Precisely, "yoloing" means to act in a manner in which you are aware that you only live once, and are not afraid to take chances and bear a magnitude of risks that are accompanied with yoloing. Examples used in context:

  • Marley and me yoloed as we snowboarded across the highway in our banana suits last July.
  • Tomorrow, I am going to go yoloing atop the treetops of the Persnickety Islands with a pride of lions.
  • I found a 10 year old package of rubber bands in my basement, would you like to go yolo and bungee jump off the Walmart down my street?

Likewise, it is also unclear when the adverb/adjective form of yolo was first introduced to the general teenage population. As an adjective, yololy describes an individual who possesses distinguishable yolo traits. Such as the attitude that you only live once and the philosophy that life should be lived to its fullest. The adverb form indicates the manner or extent to which an individual has yoloed. Examples used in context:

  • Jimmy yololy decided to sled down the side of the Empire State Building on a cactus.
  • Austin is such a yololy boy
  • Zach yololy ran across a mine field and almost made it half way!

  • After Mike ate a plastic water bottle and tried to rip the carpet off the floor using his bare teeth, I knew he was a yoloer.
  • That Mikey is such a yoloer, yesterday he laid out to tan on train tracks and used a #1 pencil to take a test!
