Monsenor Oscar Romero

Monsenor Romero

All throughout El Salvador Monsenor Romero is loved. He is considered a hero and a martyr for the poor. Monsenor Romero spent several years living with the ill in a hospital, just steps away from his parish. He provided spiritual comfort to the dying. He started out practicing traditional Catholic teachings and then later moved toward liberation theology. His change came after witnessing continual mistreatment of the poor by the elite and government forces. The more he spoke out the more he was harassed by those in power. Monsenor Romero could feel his death drawing near and wrote a letter summoning up his feelings regarding his impending death. Shortly after that he was shot in the heart while performing mass. In March of 2005 the 25th anniversary of his death was remembered. He is remembered through Central America as a hero.
