Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, México
I lived in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, México in northern Mexico,
about an hour north of Monterrey. Sabinas Hidalgo has about 40,000
inhabitants. I went to school, went to Rotary meetings, met some very
nice people, and really enjoyed my experience. Staying in one place
and seeing the same people all the time also allowed me to work on
my Spanish skills and make good friends.

I played for my schools's basketball team. I was the star player.
Hard to believe I was a bench warmer in high school. They gave me
the second place tournament trophy.
A rare site in Mexico, three white skinned, blonde haired, blue eyed
girls in the same place.
I was able to particpate in many cultural activities. My first one was
the day of independence parade on September 16. I have never
been so hot in my whole life. It was 105 degrees!
This is perhaps the smallest bathroom I have ever seen. I took this
in a dentist office which also had an arcade, ball pit, concession
stand and small movie theatre.
Rotary meetings are handled a bit differently in Mexico. Women are
not allowed to be Rotarians, they are simply the wives of the Rotarians.
They have their separate meetings and raise money. Once a month I
went to their meetings and this was a great way to meet new people
and work on my Spanish.This is the first meeting I went to in August.
They always met in the restaurant Los Sillares, it became my favorite
place to eat.
