Lake Worth

I grew up fighting with my brother in the back seat of an Oldsmobile Delta '88. Every year since I was three, my family went on a Spring Break trip to Florida to visit my grandma in Lake Worth. Every year was a new adventure. At first, my brother, who is four years older then I am, and I could fit comfortably in the back seat, but as the years went on and we got older and bigger, the trip became that much more of an adventure.

We had the usual sibling quarrels, he did this, he did that, and he's farting on me… you know, the usual fights. Then mom and dad would pull over the car, go to the trunk and get us food. That usually worked, we'd get our tummies full and kick each other to sleep, waking up in Florida.

One year my father decided we were too big for the back seat, so he borrowed a motor home from a colleague of his. This ended up being the greatest vacation ever, well, at least for my brother and I. We weren't even out of Michigan the first time the motor home broke down. (Being a child at the time, I don't remember any of this, my parents told me about it years later.) But they say that they spent more time & money fixing the motor home than enjoying the vacation.

My brother and I, however, have different memories… It was beautiful, we each had our own bunk beds, there was a refrigerator, stove, bathroom, television… it was home away form home. We could walk away from each other to avoid fighting, sleep without kicking each other; it was wonderful, we were so happy.

When the motor home broke down for about the fifth or sixth time; we stalled right in the middle of a busy street, right at the intersection, blocking the left turn lane. My parents rushed out to find out what happened now, it was the radiator, and my brother went to the bathroom. I stayed in my bunk bed, didn't want to get in the way, when my mother comes bursting in… screaming something about how everyone is flipping her and my father off and honking. Well, we all though it was because of the location where we broke down, causing quite the traffic backup.

My mother went back outside to give my father some water, and then I decided to check on my brother. I opened the bathroom door to find him sticking his bare ass out the bathroom window and mooning all passers-by… I guess we know why everyone was honking… I don't think my mother has forgiven him yet… J

Later in that trip, we stayed in a park in South Carolina, right on the coast. I met a little girl out by the water who was gathering oysters with her Grandma. Later that night we sat with them and ate oysters out of the half-shell. Grandma would hold one over the fire until it popped, then hand it to who ever was ready to eat it. I tried one, strange feeling, but a wonderful taste none the less.

I remember every year; we'd stop while going through the Rockies to pick up rocks from the mountains. Usually, by the time we got to Florida the car was full of rocks and pebbles. Oddly, they never made it the whole trip; they always seemed to vanish in Florida…

My mothers favorite part of these trips were the truck stops. We'd hit every truck stop from here to Florida for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dad would get his Biscuit and gravy, mom and brother would get the Eggs Benedict. I usually got flapjacks, the maple syrup was to die for and the pancakes were the size of the plates they were served on.

I saw some of the strangest people in my life in those places. No teeth, dirty, sleeping at the tables, usually big stomachs, like my dads… My mother always told me "They may look different and sound different, but they're the sweetest people you'll ever meet." I don't know if I believe that, but they sure were hospitable and cooked darn good food.

English Town, NJ

If you are a shopping finatic, this is the place to be! English Town has to be the absolute best shopping in the East. It is a HUGE flee market, just incredible. Booth after booth after booth of "stuff". Some people bring old stuff, like a garage sale, some sell new, like Pavilion Luggage. There is sporting goods, fishing tackle, Beanie Babies, clothes, shoes, socks, jewelery, luggage and more…
