The volleyball program at Lakewood High School is a perennial Class B power in the state of Michigan. The program began to gain success in the year 1990 when current head coach Kellie Rowland was given the opportunity to lead the program. In the early days of the Rowland era the team struggled against in league rivals Description: Lakewood High School new gymnasiumOkemos and Mason however in a few short years the program was dominating the league and demanding attention from other top programs around the state. The team began to consistently win in the postseason and it was at this time that Rowland realized the pride and joy that a group of 12 girls could bring to a community. As the team began to win more and more the crowds became bigger and bigger to the point where at both home and away matches the stands were filled with Lakewood faithful. Lakewood recently built a new gym with the passage of a bond and this has allowed for the crowds at matches to be even greater in numbers. These crowds are often feared by the opponents of Lakewood because very rarely do you see crowds as rambunctious as the Lakewood students. The most intimidating factor of the Lakewood fans however has to be what is known as the Lakewood Clap. As the team is getting announced every Lakewood fan stands begins the clap along with stomping their feet. This clap becomes quite loud as the 500 or so Lakewood faithful perform in perfect unison.

Lakewood volleyball has also become known for its delicious food spread at all day Saturday tournaments. The most famous dish at those tournaments has even been given the nickname volleyball chicken. The parents are always sure to bring the food as well because the better the spread the more students that show up to cheer on their daughters and will them to victory.

The volleyball program is most definitely an extended family for all members involved with it. The teams often stay in touch with each other and the coaches long after they graduate high school. This family atmosphere is one of the main reasons for the fan support that the team generates as well as being a key factor to the team’s success on the court. The chemistry that the teams from Lakewood have is evident to their opponents and all fans watching their matches. This family feeling however does not stop with the team as many of the loyal fans are also considered to be a part of the family.
