Manipulative Activity

Grade Level: Mainly for 9th and 10th grade geometry classes. This activity covers angles and how to find averages.

Type of Activity: This activity involves group work, discovery, investigation, and thinking skills.

Materials: A gonometer, yardstick, and blanket for each group. Also a copy of activity for each student.

Description of Activity:

1. Handout activity sheets to each group and explain and demonstrate what flexion and extension are. Explain the gonometer and yardstick activities.

2. Have students make all 6 measurements for each group member, average their wrist and elbow results, and put their results in the“average” column. When finished, have students write the norms up on the chart on the board while the teacher computes the average shoulder and trunk flexions for male and females.

3. After all groups are completed, have each group average one average measurement for each specific measurement for the whole class.

4. Put up the norms that physical therapists use on the overhead. Discuss and compare the class norms with the norms of the chart. Ask why the results are simmiliar or dissimiliar.

5. Give students the list of questions for homework.
