Multigenre Webquest Assignment

By: Ms. Hannah Scholten

Introduction: Most people have more than one way of looking at a subject, right? I’m assuming the same is true for you. Have you ever felt trapped by the constraints of a “normal” research paper? Well, now is your chance to experience something a little different. We will be writing multigenre papers. This will give you the opportunity to explore a subject from several different angles and writing styles. This is not your common research paper.

Task: Over the next two weeks we will be composing multi-genre papers. You will compose a 6-8 page paper containing at least 6 different writing genres (We will learn about these in class). You will learn how to connect the pieces through your chosen topic and how to utilize the genres you’ve chosen effectively. You’ll use several different internet sites to find examples of genres to share in class, and you will post some of your final pieces on the class website.

Process: As we learn about these different genres in class you will be responsible for locating examples from the internet (outside of class, generally two per day) and posting them on the class website with proper citation, or sharing them with the class the following day. At the same time you will be practicing writing in these different genres through homework assignments and in-class activities.

Resources: These are some of the websites you will find your information at, if there is a link to another site from these you may explore that as well. http://www.users.muohio.edu/romanots/mgrpapers.htm , http://www.learner.org/channel/workshops/middlewriting/p5_mr_samples.htm, http://www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us/cyberenglish9/multi_genre/multigenre.htm,

*Also, be sure to watch the TV. show “Scrubs” at some point over the two weeks. It will give you a good idea of what different genres look/sound like and how to effectively use different emotional approaches in the same piece.

Conclusion: This will be a fun and new experience for us as a class and hopefully for you in your writing career. This assignment enables you to write in a different way and utilize the internet in your class work. I hope this will make you realize that English class and technology aren’t opposed to each other. There will be a short reflective assignment attached to this one, so I can see how you felt about this process. We will discuss this farther along in the process.
