arassment
is any form of behavior that constitutes lack of respect, teasing, put-downs,
sexual or ethnic negative remarks, physical gestures, swearing and excluding
from activities. Harassment can be a form of hate. Harassment can bring
on violence and also depression. If harassment is not confronted, students
can lose freedoms. Teachers must work together to stamp out harassment
in their classrooms on a daily basis. For learning to take place for each
child equally, harassment must be stopped.
Females should not have to worry about a male teasing
her, by his making sexist comments in the classroom. Students should not
have to listen to swearing in the classroom or the hallways. Minorities
should not have to feel like they have to sit together at one table to
avoid rejection. The student that is smart should not have to feel embarrassed
about it ,or feel that he has to hide it to be accepted. The student that
is retarded or has autism should be able to walk down the hallway of his
school and not have to be verbally abused.
As a teacher, I plan to do everything that I can
to stop harassment in the classroom. My hope is that other teachers will
work with me so that we can create a learning environment where students
feel safety and friendship. I do not want any student to dred coming to
school.
The articles that I found gave me a variety
of situations. Article 1 ,was a case defining the present school code,
and whether it needed updating. In other words, it talked about freedom
of speech versus harassment. Article 2. talked about a case of a teacher
being harassed by students. The students made threats and also placed swastikas
on the walls, against a teacher that was Jewish. Article 3., was about
prayers at graduation being discontinued in 1995. It also stated that students
have the right to say individual prayers at school, and that they can meet
before and after school for ceremonies with other students. Article 4,
was an article about the pain and anguish that a gay student went through
while trying to attend school. He went through physical and verbal harassment
for years while attending a Catholic School. He felt so alone and sad that
he committed suicide. Article 5, was about the power of peer pressure from
other students. A Black student in the article talked about the teasing
he encountered in school ,and how the teachers did nothing to help
him. Article 6, talked about gay and lesbian harassment and how school
policies are changing to address students' special needs. It was about
the students that are living with parents that are gay partners.
