The Project |
First, let me introduce myself: My name is Sara, and I’m a second-year senior at Grand Valley State University where I’m a student in the Honors College. Part of the Honors curriculum is to complete a Senior Project where we create a representation of our education. For most students, this project is very closely related to their majors and future career goals. Well, apparently I’m not your average student. When I started here at Grand Valley I didn’t have a major, I was one of the many “undecideds.” However, I had always enjoyed working with kids, so I decided to take an Introduction to Education class. After taking that class I decided on my major: Special Education. For the next three years I worked towards my Psychology/Special Education degree… But at the end of the third year I began to question whether or not education was where I was really meant to be. So I changed my major. I’m sure most college students can relate to me there! Now my major is strictly Psychology. So, why didn’t I do a project related to Psychology? Basically, I’m just still unsure about what I want to be when I “grow up.” I thought this project would be a great opportunity to try something new. That’s why I decided to see not only if I was really any good at making jewelry, but if I could make some money doing something I really like to do. I have always enjoyed making jewelry, but until recently didn’t have much knowledge beyond simple knotting techniques for hemp and thread jewelry. I was first introduced to beading when I attended a beading workshop hosted by the Native American Student Association here at GVSU. There I made my first pair of earrings, and I was hooked! Unfortunately, for the past few years, I haven’t been able to spend much time with this great hobby. Silly things like school just took up too much of my time. Having this project has given me the excuse to take time for the things I enjoy. Don’t get the wrong idea though, this project has been a lot of work. Earlier in an Education class, I had the opportunity to create a website. I thought that could draw on that experience to create a more in depth and more functional website that would showcase and sell my jewelry. Boy, did I overestimate my website making abilities! Creating this site has been a real struggle, but a struggle that has been well worth it now that I see the final product. I am very proud of what I have created, and I hope that others will see it as a positive contribution to the world wide web! |

My first pair of earrings! |
So this is me! (and my pup) |
The Details |
So what exactly does this project entail?
• Making jewelry! (I chose to focus on earrings)
• Logging my progress.
Also, I had originally planned to donate any profits to a local elementary school art program. Unfortunately, my website has only reached its current functionality very recently, and I have yet to sell anything. Hopefully though, that will change before too long!
Did I achieve my goals?
Here is a table outlining my initial plan, and my actual progress throughout the semester.
** As you can see… my timeline was shot! But I managed to get it all done quite nicely. (I hope you think it was all done quite nicely!)
My thoughts after completion:
One thing that is sadly missing is an order form for custom jewelry creations. I did however include on the Catalog page that I will do custom orders. The ordering process is just a bit lacking in functionality. For now they will just have to e-mail me with what they want. Another negative it the picture quality. About a moth ago I ordered a mannequin head for jewelry display. I was hoping to be able to photograph each pair of earrings in a way that customers would be better able to asses how the earrings look when you wear them. Sadly my mannequin head is on back order. I’ve got my fingers crossed that it shows up soon!
Although I regret to admit that my initial goals may have been a bit ambitious, I am extremely proud of my final product! I also hope to continue working with it in the future. I feel that this project has reminded me that it’s ok to take risks, and try something new. Maybe someday in the future this will become an actual business. I am thankful to the Honors College for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity! |
Week: |
Goals: |
Log of Progress: |
January 7-11 |
Research, Proposal |
After a very rushed application process, my proposal was submitted and approved! |
January 14-18 |
Collect supplies, Develop basic design of website |
Being excited about the project, I drove an hour and a half to pick up all of my supplies and returned to finish 3 pairs of earrings. |
January 21-25 |
Create demo pieces, take pictures |
Oh, the lost weeks… During these past few weeks, I regret to say that little work was done on any part of my project. Because the work in my other classes was more pressing, I lost track of what I should have been doing with my jewelry and my website. Don’t worry! I WILL make up for it next week. |
January 28-February 1 |
Construct a functional basic structure of website |
|
February 4-8 |
Post pictures to site and begin work on the selling aspect of the site |
|
February 11-15 |
Focus on aesthetics of pages |
This week I finally started working on my website, and boy is it a LOT more work than I expected! I have three pages outlined: Home, About the Project, and Information about Beading. |
February 18-22 |
Develop guidelines for special orders/Create an order form |
Midterms, ick! Sadly my beautiful beading site has been pushed to the back burner. But, I did spend a few hours making earrings. I forgot how much time it takes to make just one pair. |
February 25-29 |
Get first full draft of site online |
I worked a lot on the aesthetic part of the site this week… I realized that it isn’t so easy to make things look consistent and professional. Also, I bought new beads (Gold!) and made some earrings. |
March 3-7 (Spring Break) |
Trial week for site, note any problems in functionality or design, specifically test all links, pictures, and graphics |
I came up with a GREAT idea! I’m going to add a “How To” page to the site. I detailed each step in the process of making an earring and took a million pictures along the way. |
March 10-14 |
Focus on jewelry |
FINALLY got the site online! It’s very sad… still doesn’t include the gallery/store portion. But, I did add navigation bars that make it a LOT easier to get around. |
March 17-21 |
Iron out any kinks in the website, Create a feedback page |
Added the “How To” to the bottom of the Beading Info. page. After hours of trying to make this as orderly and comprehensive as possible, I was about to pull my hair out! Fortunately though, I think I succeeded. I also made what have become my favorite pair of earrings: black and silver… I don’t want to give them up! |
March 24-28 |
Sell something! |
Only 11 weeks into the process, and I’ve finally gotten the pictures up, and instructions for buying earrings… Frankly, I’m not impressed. As of right now, a buyer will have to e-mail me with their request, I will give them my paypal information so that they can pay, and once I receive payment I will ship them off... |
March 31-April 4 |
Continue to create jewelry and post to site |
Earrings, earrings… made some more this week. Tried translucent beads, not sure about them... |
April 7-11 |
Donate any profits from the semester to a local elementary art class or related charity, and possibly copy website to a free hosting site |
Worked on the functionality of the Catalog, created “More Info” pages for each pair of earrings. The actual purchase process isn’t cutting it, I NEED to find something better! |
April 14-18 |
Present final version of website and turn in journal |
The answer to my prayers! I learned how to add “Buy Now” buttons! Now customers can pay online using a credit card, debit card, or bank account. Of course it is all safely done through PayPal, my savior!
Also spent countless hours trying to get every last thing up: pictures, info, this table… It seemed like every time I would add something, or fix a little problem that I noticed, something else would go wrong! Stressful! But the website is looking quite nice if I do say so myself... |
April 21-25 |
|
This week has been chaotic to say the least! I’ve been trying to get the website to work perfectly, but again it seems like every time I fix one problem, another pops up! I finally managed to get the Feedback Form working properly, and all the links are working! Wednesday morning I will present the final product. Of the stress of finals week... |
