Technology in Art Education Philosophy
Flash Animation by Alicia St.Germain for Teaching in the Non-Traditional Cannon
I
have always believed in the values of Art for Life. A philosophy of teaching
that coincides with facilitating the medium of art as a social responsibility
that helps to develop within an individual a sense of self, a sense of place,
and a sense of community. By using Art for life my aim as a teacher is to help
students prepare for success in school as well as in life, through teaching and
learning centered on art.
As
we enter into a new digital age we need to consider the importance and usages
that technology and digital media provide as resources and materials for
teaching skills that will be beneficial to students development. As a teacher I
have found technology useful for researching and developing lesson plans through
Internet searches and discussions in online teaching chat rooms. Technology
allows for lesson to be taught using Power Points, short films, as well as
presentations of online galleries and museums. Students can utilize computers
to learn about art history through web searches, and display their own artwork
in international online galleries. Technology is also rapidly becoming the new
medium through which student can make art work using programs such as
Photoshop, Illustrator, and 3D modeling programs.
I do not altogether believe that technology and
digital programs should be used to encompass and take over the traditional
methods of expression through art making such as painting, printing, and
sculpting, but should be used to supplement and refining these processes. By
modeling appropriate technology usage and assisting students with internet
research, I will help students to develop the skills that are essential to
their understanding of art through technology as a source of personal and
communal exploration.
