Lesson Plan for Day #2
Title:
Visualizing the story world: Dramatizing “The Nose Grid”
Overview: After reading the beginning of the novel,
through page 28, students will have the opportunity to dramatize a section of
their assigned reading from the previous night.
“The Nose Grid” provides great examples of character development, as
well as various text and language conventions that M.T. Anderson employs. This activity will help students visualize
the text, get to know characters, and understand chatting vs. dialogue elements
in the text.
Goals / Objectives:
·
Students will
imagine the world in which the characters of Feed live.
·
Students will
borrow visualization techniques from each other’s dramatic representations of
the text.
·
Students will
discover how text conventions transfer into real time actions in our
imaginations while reading.
Materials / Resources Needed
Dramatizing “The Nose
Grid” assignment sheets
Printed sections (1-4) of
the text for easy manipulation
Sticky name tags or tape
Activities / Procedures:
I will pass out the
assignment sheet and explain the activity.
After answering any general questions, I will help students break up
into groups of 7-8. Having four groups
is ideal. Once groups are made, I will
pass out the four text sections to the four groups respectively. |
5 minutes |
As the groups work
together to turn their text into a drama script, I will be available to help
them. |
20 minutes |
The drama groups will
present their skits in chronological order.
Groups should try to present as smoothly and continuously as possible. |
15 minutes |
If time allows, I will
lead a discussion about what the students noticed during the
performances. What did some of the
other groups do differently than your group?
What things did you like about the different presentations? How were these dramatizations similar or
different to the movie that was playing in your head when you first read this
chapter? |
10 minutes |
I will assign pages 29-72
for tomorrow.
Assessment:
I will informally observe
student involvement in the preparation for the skit and the performance. Today’s activity will factor into a
participation grade.
