Lesson Plan for Day #4

Title: Real-World Connector Cable: Finding possible connections.

Overview:  Today will consist of three major discussions.  We will start out by discussing what students have already observed in the first five sections of their Detective Notebook.  We will continue by familiarizing ourselves with the idea of allegory for the sake of social commentary.  We will make connections between this new idea, the text, and our discussion yesterday.  We will finish by discussing the text as am anti-utopia.  Students will be ready to start making observations about possible allegories by the end of class today.

Goals / Objectives:

·        Students will start thinking about the novel as a social commentary

·        Students will understand the term: allegory and begin to speculate about allegorical meaning in Feed

·        Students will begin to think of Feed as an anti-utopia

Materials / Resources Needed

Computer with visual projection capabilities

A Conversation With Anderson” handout

Activities / Procedures:

I will log into our classroom discussion board so that we can discuss the observations that the students have made so far.  We will also discuss observations that students have made in their notebook even if they have not posted them.

15 minutes

I will pass out the “A Conversation with Anderson” handout.  We will read the first excerpt together and discuss what M.T. Anderson meant.  What does it mean to discuss issues in an allegorical way?  Is there a connection between our debate yesterday and how we actually interact with our friends in real life?  Did the debate yesterday provide an “almost allegorical way to discuss things we’re dealing with now”?

15 minutes

I will turn the discussion to the idea of Utopian and anti-utopian societies.  We will read the definitions provided on the hand out.  What sort of traits in Titus’ world seem to be ideal?  Do you think Titus feels that his world is convenient? How about perfect?  Are there things that lead us to think that maybe there are “fatal flaws” or “perversions” in Titus’ world?

15 minutes

I will quickly check notebooks to make sure that there are at least 4 entries.  I will assign pages 75-119 for class tomorrow.  I will also instruct students to begin filling out their Detective Notebooks in the sixth section.

5 minutes

Assessment:

The assessment for today was the notebook check.
