Lesson Plan for Day #5
Title: Consumers
and Capitalists: “They’re easy to mock, so let’s continue”
Overview: Today’s discussion is organized around
artistic criticism of consumerism and capitalism. The bulk of class time will be spent viewing
cartoons as a class and discussing the meaning, the sarcastic or critical tone
of the artist, and any connections the cartoon has to Feed. Remaining time will be spent reading the
article, “Hell is other iPods” as an example of a written critique of similar
issues to Feed. Discussion will
follow comparing and contrasting the article with the novel.
Goals / Objectives:
·
Students will
begin to understand critical viewpoints of Consumerism and Capitalism
·
Students will start
to make connections between outside criticism and allegorically based criticism
in the novel, Feed.
Materials / Resources Needed
Consumer-Capitalist Cartoons in
print, transparency, or electronic form
Activities / Procedures:
I will open class by
giving students the opportunity to share any “Real-World Connector Cable”
observations they made while reading for class today. |
15-25 minutes |
I will display the cartoons
selected for today one at a time. I
will encourage students to interpret the cartoons, make connections to real
life, and make connections to the text.
It is not necessary that we cover all of the cartoons. The later cartoons in the document may be
out of reach for these students. |
25-35 minutes |
I will assign pages
120-165 for tomorrow’s class. |
