Lesson Plan for Day #6

Title: Half full / half empty: How the media’s language shapes our minds

Overview: This class session will also be discussion based.  We will talk about whether or not the media affects the way Titus and his friends think.  We will then talk about whether or not the media today affects the way we think.  Current articles and satirical cartoons will then be discussed to make students more aware of how the media can color our opinions.

Goals / Objectives:

·        Students will be more aware of how language use in the media affects the way they think

Materials / Resources Needed

Hurricane Katrina articles

Activities / Procedures:

I will start class with an open discussion.  Do you think that the way language is worded over the feed affects the way Titus and his friends think?  Do you think that they way our media uses language affects the way that we think?

15 minutes

I will pass out or display the articles about Hurricane Katrina survivors.  I will prompt the students to free-write.  After reading the first article, what was your opinion of the young man?  After reading the second article, what was your opinion of the two residents?  Were the actions of the two groups of hurricane survivors different in nature?  How do you know?  If you had seen these articles separately from one another, would you ever have realized how the media’s language in these articles affected you?

15 minutes

I will lead a class discussion about the student’s free-writing assignment and the articles in question.

20 minutes

I will assign pages 166-203 for tomorrow’s class.

Assessment:

Students will receive participation points for their free-writing today.
