Lesson Plan for Day #7

Title: Stardom or Starvation: The problem with the lesions in Feed

Overview:  This class session will give students increasing freedom to discuss their own interpretations of the lesion allegory in Feed.  This class will also fulfill Anderson’s goal as the students use his text as a tool to talk about current controversial issues.

Goals / Objectives:

·        Students will actively draw connections between real-world issues and the lesions in the novel, Feed

·        Students will think critically about our culture’s portrayal of ideal feminine weight

Materials / Resources Needed

Stardom or Starvation” pictures

Activities / Procedures:

At the beginning of class we will have an open discussion about the lesions that Quendy and Calista are getting.  What do you think about the lesions?  What caused the original ones?  Why are people getting fake ones?  Do you think they are cool?  Why did Violet yell the way that she did at Quendy during the party?  What sorts of things in today’s culture do you think the lesions could represent?  We will make a list, and add it to the discussion board, “Real-World Connector Cable.”

20 minutes

After discussing and validating all of the suggestions for real-world lesions, we will look further into one possible connection.  I will display the pictures contained in the document “Stardom or Starvation,” one at a time.  I will ask students to free-write about how their reactions to each picture.  How does this picture make you feel?  Is this person popular?  Is this person successful?  Is this person attractive?  If you could, would you look like this person or date this person?  Is this person happy?

15 minutes

Open discussion about student reactions to the pictures and their free-writing.  Why did we answer these questions the way we did?  Why do these pictures affect us so differently even though all of the people pictured suffer from malnourishment and low body weight?

15 minutes

I will assign pages 207-251 for tomorrow’s class.

Assessment:

Students will receive participation points for their free-writing and discussion participation today.
