Herman Miller Online Instruction Sheet Project

The purpose of this project was to reduce the amount of paper waste generated by the large
instruction sheet manuals that come in many of the office installation boxes. The people who
are installing the office furniture are usually professionals who are familiar with the furniture
and do not require an instruction manual. Herman Miller wanted to put the instruction sheets into
PDFs and make them available online so they could be easily accessed without generating unnecessary
paper waste. By doing so, Herman Miller could save over $500,000 worth of paper and services a year.

Many of the following images are screenshots that I took during the project to demonstrate how I
used IBM's Rational Application Developer (RAD) to begin development on the dynamic web application.

When I stated the project, I knew what prepared statements were but had never used them in a practical
setting. Throughout the project I took user input and put it into prepared statements to pull specific
products from the database.

The final picture is a Firefox image where it shows me testing the application with the help of Firebug.
Firebug was an awesome debugging tool and I will most certainly use it in future projects. With this project
I discovered the amount of testing involved with application development and how utilizing a good debugger
can make a big difference.
