Hi!  Welcome to my web page.  Included in this page will be information about me and what I like to do.  Thanks for visiting my web page!

Whenever I get a chance, I like to draw and sketch things on my mind, what I see outside and images of fictional characters I have read about.  I would say that I am a proficient sketcher, but I do have my problems with painting and watercolor.  My sketches are usually done with charcoal, pencil, color pencil or pastels (which I just picked up, so I'm not all that good yet).  I have always been enchanted with stories of other realms and their inhabitants.  When I was small, I remember climbing trees to look for fairies, going into the fields and pretending I was running away from a mean old witch or making a fortress to protect from an army of dragons approaching.  For me at present, reading and drawing allows an escape and respite from the pressures of exams, homework and school life. Elfwood is the largest home for Science Fiction/Fantasy artwork and fan fiction.  Artists and writers who want to show their work post them on the site and allow others to see and judge their abilities.  I love going to this site to look at artwork for inspiration.

I am currently attending Grand Valley State University and hope that when I do leave I will be lucky enough to find a job that challenges my mind and fills me with expectation each day I go to work.  Grand Valley is a four year university with its main campus located in Allendale, Michigan offering courses for all majors.  The major programs that Grand Valley is well known for is it's health science, business, education and engineering programs.  There are currently up to 43,000 students attending Grand Valley and its satellite schools.

Now we get into information about me.  Of course as you know, my name is Mai Thao Vang.  I was born in Laos on October 8, 1984.  After the Vietnam war, my family decided to leave Laos and head to Thailand.  We stayed in a refugee camp for a few months, then my great uncle arranged for us to be transported to California.  I was three when we arrived in Fresno, California.  I still distinctly remember stepping down the stairs and away from the noisy airplane.  I lived in California until I was thirteen.  My father decided to move everyone to Tulsa, Oklahoma when I was just starting 8th grade.  We lived happily in Oklahoma for an additional three years, until my fathers job had to relocated to Kansas.  My uncle Tom coerced my father into moving us again to Warren, Michigan when I was in the second semester of my Junior year.  That is a brief history of where I have been.

I find that I'm a flower child at heart.  I love and respect nature and all that belong to her.  My cultural religion is actually based on animism, but my family has basically converted to Christianity.  The Hmong people believe in a system devoted to those long past ancestors and they worship them so those ancestors can bring them good luck for the coming future.

Hmong quilt

The Hmong people are indigenous to the regions of Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.  They have survived in that region for many years.  In the Vietnam war, the United States called for help from the Hmong males to fight against the Vietnamese Communists in which they agreed using tactics of guerrilla warfare to aid in the attack against the Pathet Lao.  When the US withdrew from the war, the Hmong people were left to fend for themselves against the angry government.  The Hmongs who were left in the area, being afraid for their lives left the region and headed to Thailand in order to escape execution and brutality.  Those who fled were exposed to horrible living conditions in refugee camps in Thailand.  A few families who had members already residing in other countries were allowed to flee to those countries.  The United States, France and Australia offered to relocated a few of the Hmongs who were lucky enough to be drawn out.  That is all I have to say about this matter.  I would have to write a whole essay in order to tell of all the doings that led to why I am here.  At the Hmong Homepage is information relating to what I have spoken on.  If you would like more information, please fill free to click on the Hmong quilt above to be directed to the Hmong web site.  I merely know what I have researched and that may not be the entirety of the story.
