Alternative Spring Break

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) provides students the opportunity to emerse themselves in a project or issue by serving in a variety of locations around the country during Spring Break week. ASB is affiliated with the national organization, Breakaway, located at Vanderbilt University. Each site is led by an undergraduate site leader who coordinates the logistics and leads the group in reflective activities. Past issues and destinations have included:

· Habitat for Humanity, Wichita, Kansas

· Native Americans, Oklahoma and South Dakota

Best Buddies

Best Buddies is a national program that matches college students with individuals having a physical or mental impairment. Buddies focus on social interaction and personal development.

Disabilities

Project ABLE (Abilities Beyond Limited Expectations) is a program designed to raise awareness in the community regarding persons with disabilities. Programs include Into the Schools, Empathy Training, and Stride for Pride.

Environment

The environmental group coordinates the Adopt-a-Highway program and also promotes awareness of recycling and environmental action in the community.

Habitat for Humanity

Affiliated with the international organization, the GVSU campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity is primarily affiliated with the Kent County chapter, but also works with the Eastern Ottawa County chapter. Habitat for Humanity helps raise money and build houses for low income families in the Southwest Michigan. In the summer of 1995, the GVSU chapter dedicated a house to a Grand Valley student and her family.

Health and AIDS

Designed to teach individuals about the prevention and effects of HIV and AIDS. Service opportunities include volunteer work at the AIDS Resource Center and Food Bank.

Hunger and Homeless

Hunger and Homeless educates students about the issue of hunger and homelessness through direct service experiences at a variety of soup kitchens and shelters in the community. They also coordinate on campus programs including Hunger Theater, the Ugly Quilt Contest, and Fasting Programs.

Literacy

Individuals help combat illiteracy in the community by tutoring children and adults with reading difficulties. Also, the literacy-drama group act out children's stories at the B.U.N.K. in Grand Rapids.

P.A.L.S. (People Assisting Little Sibs)

This program matches college students with youth from low-income families in Grand Rapids. This is a great way to make a difference in a child's life!

Seniors

Students make regular visits to Grandville Senior Neighbors and other senior centers in the community. This program also sponsors Adopt-a-Grandparent, Senior Citizen's Day, and Senior Prom.

Substance Abuse

Educates students and area youth about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse while providing recreational activities as an alternative to drugs. Programs include Natural High All-Nighters, Alcohol Awareness Week, and Project Charlie.

Volunteer Corps

Designed to give volunteers a diverse experience with multiple issues such as working in soup kitchens, hospitals, schools, and senior citizens. This is a great issue for new volunteers or those with no specific volunteer interest.
