Attitude & Interests Reading Survey
I created this reading survey for upper elementary classrooms to find out how to better adjust instruction to meet students’ interests and needs.

The Perfectly Organized Desk

I made this poster to give my third grade students a visual reminder of how they can best organize their desks.  Once their desks were organized, it allowed for more instruction time and less frustration for the students.  I did a random daily desk check; if that student’s desk was organized, s/he would get to use my over-sized teaching pencil to fill out their homework assignment sheet at the end of the day.

Demonstrating RESPECT Bulletin Board

Ask students to give one example of how they could demonstrate respect.  Compile the student responses and create three categories with specific examples.  On the bulletin board students move the Post-It note with their name to a different category to show what form of respect they will focus on.  Have students reflect and change weekly.

“Ask the Teacher” Box

During transition or free time, students can write any question on a slip of paper and drop it in the “Ask the Teacher” box.  Present a few answers each day or as time fillers.  You can write the answers on the back of the question slip and tape them to a vertical surface in the classroom for students to check back on if they like.  Students will ask many impressive, inquisitive questions!

Proprioception Animal Walks

I made these posters so students would have a visual for various animal walks that increase proprioception.  Proprioception activities push the muscles that work.  Any activity that makes the student work against effort or resistance increases sensory input through the muscles or joints.  Proprioceptive activity is a great way to calm students down or make them more alert.

Interactive Sight Word Bulletin Board

The students will correctly show they can identify sight words by matching each sight word with its corresponding picture.  The students will form complete sentences using the sight word cards at the bottom of the board.

“Molly’s Pilgrim: A Family Heritage & Bullying Unit” (Nov – Dec 2006)

I created and implemented an exciting, hands-on, exploratory unit for my third grade student teaching classroom on pilgrims, family heritage, and bullying.  The lessons incorporated Bloom’s Taxonomy, as well as the multiple intelligences.  Lessons were also differentiated as our classroom contained both English Language Learners and Gifted students.

To kick-off this exciting month-long unit, I surprised the students by

coming into the classroom as a lost Polish traveler, frantically asking

the students, in Polish, where I should go!

Students enjoyed hearing and learning a few Polish phrases!

Sharing my Polish heritage!  My Busia’s (Grandma) Polish dancer dolls.

I created this unit bulletin board to display the various topics covered.

§         Definitions of bully, respect, Pilgrim, pilgrim, heritage

§         Traditional clothing of the countries students’ grandparents came from

§         Paper & fabric dolls students made to reflect their countries’ traditional clothing

§         Location of each students’ ancestry

§         Students wrote the action someone should take in three different bullying scenarios

To conclude the unit, students enjoyed a Family Heritage Banquet where parents brought in their favorite foods representative of their family’s heritage and cooking traditions.  The students were very interested and adventurous in trying all the food!
